SATYARUP SIDDHANTA BECOMES FIRST INDIAN TO CLIMB MT GILUWE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Indian mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta became the first Indian to climb Mt Giluwe - the second highest mountain in Papua New Guinea. Satyarup reached the summit of the mountain which is at an elevation of 4,367 metres on November 11.

Satya now has scaled 5 of the 7 volcanic summits. In a few days, the Bengal's pride will now set out to summit Mt Wilhelm - the highest mountain of Papua New Guinea. Once successful, Satya who is on a mission to popularise adventure sports among young Indians - will be the first from India to scale these two mountains.

UP CABINET APPROVES RENAMING FAIZABAD AS AYODHYA, ALLAHABAD AS PRAYAGRAJ

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday approved the renaming of Faizabad and Allahabad divisions as Ayodhya and Prayagraj respectively. The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet presided over by chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow.

The decision came a day after the Allahabad high court asked the Centre and the state government to file counter-affidavits within a week on a petition challenging the decision to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj.

  • Prayagraj Mandal will include Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur and Pratapgarh districts, while Ayodhya Mandal will include Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Sultanpur, Amethi and Barabanki districts. All these districts were already involved in these divisions.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on the occasion of the festival held in Ayodhya that Faizabad district will now be known as Ayodhya. With this, he had said that a new medical college is being formed in Ayodhya, which will be named after Rajarshi Dasharath. The name of the airport being built here will be named after Shri Ram.
  • The BJP government of the center has approved the names of 25 places in the last one year. The Center had last year approved the name of Mughalsarai railway station to keep Jan Sangh leader Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
  • The ancient name of Allahabad was 'Prayag', but in the 16th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar had built a fort near Sangam, the sacred connection of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, after which its name changed. Akbar named the fort and its neighborhood 'Allahabad'. Later, Akbar's grandson Shahjahan named the whole city 'Allahabad'.

Constitutional process of rename

  • Naming a state requires modification in the Constitution with the general majority in the Parliament, but in order to change the name of the village or city, an executive order is required.
  • If the proposal to change the name of the local people or the people of a city to the state government, the state cabinet considers the proposal and after giving clearance, sends the consent of the governor.
  • The state's governor sends a letter of support to the Union Home Ministry for giving final approval and after getting the approval from the Home Ministry, the state government issues notification to change the name.
