Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on September 14 launched an ambitious social security scheme, the Samajwadi Kisan Bima Yojana. The scheme will replace the earlier Krishak Bima Yojna, which covered only land-holding farmers who had their names in revenue records. Under the new scheme, apart from those covered under the earlier scheme, all landless farmers and other such families having an annual income of less than Rs. 75,000 will also be covered. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui will be the brand ambassador for the scheme. Talking to media persons in the presence of the CM, newly appointed chief secretary Rahul Bhatnagar said in the event of a farmer’s death, his family would get up to Rs. 5 lakh and if anybody in the family falls sick, they can get cashless treatment of up to Rs. 2.5 lakh. Stating that the state government will pay the premium for the scheme and state government has already signed MoUs for this with four national insurance companies.
